Mount Monadnock: Hiking North America's Most Climbed Peak

Overview

Mount Monadnock, nestled in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, holds the title as North America's most climbed mountain and is believed to rank second globally, just after Japan's Mount Fuji.

Despite passing nearby on previous trips, I'd never tackled this iconic peak myself. Curious about its allure, I decided to venture to the summit with my son.

Our Adventure Begins

We arrived at the Mount Monadnock visitor center around 8:30 a.m., ready for the warm 80-degree day ahead. Equipped with plenty of water and snacks, we noted that this is a carry-in, carry-out park; limited food options are available at the base.

Two main trails lead to the summit: White Cross and White Dot. White Dot is steeper, so we opted for the slightly longer and "easier" White Cross Trail for our first ascent.

The Climb: A True Challenge

Even on the White Cross Trail, climbing Mount Monadnock is no simple stroll. It's an intense hike, climbing 1,900 feet over a short span.

In the dense woods of the lower trail, we enjoyed identifying various trees and plants as we trekked upwards. About halfway up, a clearing offered magnificent views of the southern and western Monadnock region.

Past 2,500 feet, the spruces become stunted and barely reach shoulder height. At around 2,700 feet, the unobstructed, rocky summit comes into view. Here, the White Cross and White Dot Trails converge, and we continued on the White Dot to the peak.

This final stretch, mostly above the tree line, was exhilarating, with breathtaking vistas of the surrounding area.

Summit Success and a Lesson Learned

Reaching the summit in about 1 hour and 40 minutes, we were rewarded with clear views of Mount Wachusett in Northern Massachusetts and Vermont’s Green Mountains.

After capturing some photos and taking a well-deserved break, we decided to descend via the White Dot Trail?"a decision we came to regret. Busy with ascending hikers, we often had to pause and let others pass, making our descent slower and more challenging.

We arrived back at the base after over four hours on the mountain.

Why Mount Monadnock?

I now understand why Mount Monadnock draws so many climbers. It's an exceptional experience accessible to anyone in reasonable shape. I recommend the White Cross Trail for a more relaxed climb, while those seeking a challenge might enjoy ascending via the White Dot and descending on the White Cross.

Monadnock State Park boasts over 40 miles of trails, with numerous paths on the eastern, northern, and western sides of the mountain.

My son and I enjoyed our hike immensely and were reminded that you don't need to scale Everest to appreciate nature’s splendor?"Mount Monadnock is more than enough for most.
