Making All City
Summary: A day of triumph and setback?"earning recognition and facing a painful moment in the same game.
As my junior year at Weequahic High School in Newark, New Jersey, came to a close, whispers began circulating among my friends: I was going to make the All City team. I was skeptical, questioning their certainty. My self-esteem wasn’t exactly soaring. I thought there was no way I’d make it; after all, the catcher from Vailsburg was more skilled than I was.
At that time, the top teams, Barringer and Vailsburg, typically got the most attention for their players. With our dismal 3-15 record, we weren't exactly contenders. I might have been the only one hitting over .300, though perhaps Dashell Meeks joined me in that distinction.
In our final game of the season against Central High School at Unterman Field, we faced a team that was mediocre at best. However, they had Richie Glenn, a pitcher with impressive speed and a challenging curveball?"which I’ll get to shortly. Determined to hit a home run, I moved closer to the plate, ready to connect with an outside pitch. Though I possessed power, I hadn’t hit many home runs that season. I was focused as Richie launched a pitch; it was a wild curveball that failed to bend and came straight for my ear.
The hit floored me, leaving me unconscious. Though the ball didn't literally stick, it felt like its threads were etched into my ear and lobe. When I came to, I found myself in Coach Ginsburg’s office. After what seemed like hours but was merely minutes, Coach Ginsburg brought fantastic news: I had made the Star-Ledger All City Baseball team. I was ecstatic yet sore, thrilled yet disoriented.
In the moment, it felt like my injury had somehow swayed the All City team voters out of sympathy. Again, my self-esteem was showing.
What an unforgettable day. I can’t help but wonder if legends like Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig ever experienced anything like this.
