Living in a household where I’m the only woman among my husband and four sons has been a surprising and delightful journey. I never anticipated how much I would enjoy the dynamic of being surrounded by all men. This experience has taught me countless lessons, especially being apart from other women’s daily influences. One delightful aspect of raising boys is observing the hobbies that capture their attention. For the past three years, trading football cards has been the centerpiece of our home conversations.
Growing up with sisters, the world of little boys was entirely new to me. I was amazed by their adventurous spirits and their obsession with activities like playing 'cops and robbers.' However, what surprised me the most was their immense joy in collecting, trading, buying, and selling football cards.
My husband, who has cherished football cards since his youth, eagerly passed this passion onto our sons. Each of them owns a hefty binder filled with their prized cards, carefully organized in a way that seems chaotic to me, yet they assure me there’s a method to their madness. According to them, “I wouldn’t understand because I’m a girl.” I wholeheartedly agree.
Every year, my boys attend a football card convention dedicated to trading, buying, and selling these cherished items. I enjoy having the house to myself during their long weekend getaway, but I also love the excitement they bring home. Their return is a family event, complete with popcorn and soda as they enthusiastically showcase every single card they acquired at the convention. Witnessing their joy and learning about football along the way has become one of my favorite experiences with them.
If you haven’t yet considered collecting and trading football cards, I highly recommend it. From my perspective as a mom, it’s not only a harmless hobby but also an educational one. What more could I ask for?
