While not annual, the FIFA World Cup and the Ashes cricket series are eagerly anticipated. The World Cup occurs every four years, while the Ashes tour happens biennially. Both are highlights for sports fans like me.
Horse Racing
Horse racing boasts two major events: the Grand National and the Derby. My personal favorite, the Grand National, is a thrilling jumping race featuring around 40 horses, making it a spectacular and unpredictable event at Aintree in Liverpool. The Derby, famous worldwide, is a prestigious flat race at Epsom Downs, showcasing top racehorses from around the globe.
Football's FA Cup
The FA Cup remains a beloved event despite debates about its declining prestige. This year, West Ham United reached the final, almost clinching victory. Historically, powerhouses like Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal often dominate, but surprises keep the excitement alive.
Formula One: The British Grand Prix
While not my top pick, the British Grand Prix still deserves attention. In its heyday with drivers like Nigel Mansell, it was more thrilling. Although current British contenders may be lacking, many motor racing enthusiasts disagree and find it captivating.
Wimbledon Tennis Championships
Wimbledon holds a special place for me, merging my enthusiasm for watching and playing tennis. Tim Henman thrilled British fans over the years, and now, with Andy Murray on the scene, the tournament continues to promise excitement and high drama.
Golf: The British Open
In golf, the British Open is a highlight, though some find the biennial Ryder Cup more exhilarating. Nonetheless, the British Open offers the possibility of a local winner, with young talents like Luke Donald poised for future successes.
