Beginner Triathlete: Why Do the Ironman?
Why Tackle the Ironman Triathlon?
Over the years, I've often been asked why I dedicate so much time to preparing for the Ironman. At first, it wasn't easy to answer because my reasons have evolved. Goals change over time, and so do the motivations behind them.
Initially, like many others, I was "Ironstruck." The moment I witnessed the event, I felt an undeniable urge to complete it. Despite not knowing how to swim or having any experience with racing bikes, I was driven by an inner force to participate.
Making the decision to pursue the Ironman was life-changing. It became a pivotal moment that influenced every aspect of my life. Now, at 56, I don’t intend to participate every year, but I have learned the immense value of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. My goal is to compete in my next Ironman when I turn 60, ensuring that I stay fit along the way. Reaching the starting line will itself be a reward, regardless of the race outcome.
Success and wealth mean little when circumstances change unexpectedly, as we saw with events like 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. In such times, our physical strength, courage, and adaptability become vital.
While not everyone needs to train for the Ironman, staying physically fit is crucial for adapting to life’s surprises, regardless of age. Take my own journey: 20 years ago, if I found myself without a lifejacket in the middle of a lake, I wouldn’t have survived. Now, I’d see it as a chance for a long swim, thanks to the confidence Ironman has given me.
I owe a great deal to this amazing event for shaping who I am today, and I encourage everyone to prioritize their well-being, no matter where they are in life.
