Baseball’s First-Month Awards
As the first month of the 2006 baseball season comes to a close, it's a perfect opportunity to assess the early frontrunners for the top awards in Major League Baseball.
American League MVP
1. Jim Thome
Despite cooling off a bit, Jim Thome has proven to be a stellar acquisition. His early performance included homering in his first two games and hitting six in the first ten. Leading the league’s most talented team with 10 homers and 24 RBIs, he’s been outstanding.
2. Jason Giambi
With a remarkable .542 on-base percentage, Giambi continues to build on last year’s comeback performance. Leading the AL in walks (27) and RBIs (27), his only drawbacks are defensive limitations and reluctance to be a full-time DH.
3. Vernon Wells
Amid Toronto’s spending spree, incumbent player Wells has excelled, hitting .374 with 9 homers and 25 RBIs, helping the Blue Jays compete with the giants of the AL East.
National League MVP
1. Albert Pujols
If he remains healthy, this award seems his to lose for years. Pujols set a record with 14 homers in April and 32 RBIs, propelling the Cardinals to a strong start.
2. Lance Berkman
Unlike last April, Berkman’s bat is in full swing, tallying 10 homers, 31 RBIs, and contributing to the Astros’ solid beginning.
3. Carlos Delgado
As a standout acquisition for the Mets, Delgado has stepped up with 10 homers and 21 RBIs, especially during Beltran’s injury and Floyd’s slump.
American League Cy Young
1. Jose Contreras
Leading with a 4-0 record and a 1.45 ERA, Contreras is a cornerstone for the White Sox, making them favorites for the AL Pennant.
2. Curt Schilling
Known for his outspoken nature, Schilling is back to backing it up on the field. His 4-1 record, 2.88 ERA, and stamina (40.2 IP) have bolstered the Red Sox into first place in the AL East.
3. Kenny Rogers
As the experienced leader among young talent, Rogers shines for the Tigers with a 4-2 record, a 2.59 ERA, and an impressive 0.98 WHIP.
National League Cy Young
1. Greg Maddux
Despite the Cubbies dealing with injuries, Maddux has been a revelation, going 5-0 with a 1.35 ERA.
2. Pedro Martinez
With early spring training concerns about his toe forgotten, Pedro stands out with a 5-0 record and a 0.89 WHIP, defeating the rival Braves twice.
3. Bronson Arroyo
Leading the surprising Reds, Arroyo boasts a 5-0 record with a 2.06 ERA, proving to be a formidable force.
Rookies of the Year
American League: Jonathan Papelbon
In Boston's high-pressure environment, Papelbon leads the AL in saves (10) and has not allowed a run in over 15 innings.
National League: Prince Fielder
Unlike his father Cecil, Prince didn’t need a stint in Japan to find his form. His .343 average tops all rookies.
