Allen Iverson's Exclusion from the Dream Team: A Clear Oversight
Summary
It was both insulting and inexplicable when Jerry Colangelo decided to exclude Allen Iverson from the Dream Team tryouts in Las Vegas. As the executive and managing director of the United States Men's National Team, his decision was a mistake.
Article Body
The decision to leave Allen Iverson out of the Dream Team is puzzling. Jerry Colangelo, responsible for assembling the U.S. Men's National Team, made a questionable call by not inviting Iverson to the tryouts in Las Vegas.
Since 2004, the Dream Team has underperformed, partly due to not fielding the best talent in Athens and Indianapolis. You can’t expect top results if you don’t send your best players.
This year, the nation’s top basketball stars were eager to restore glory, with seven of the NBA's eight leading scorers chosen for the team. Yet, Iverson was overlooked. Colangelo justified this by saying the team needed more distributors.
Iverson’s age, cited as an excuse, doesn’t hold up well. He will be 33 during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but Bruce Bowen will be 37, and both Chauncey Billups and Antawn Jamison will also be 32. Age was not a valid reason when others faced the same circumstance. Furthermore, Iverson shows no signs of slowing down.
Despite his flaws, Iverson remains one of just two NBA players ?" along with Dwyane Wade ?" ranking in the top 10 for both scoring and assists. Even Kobe Bryant, the leading scorer, ranks only 28th in assists.
This team has the talent to win without Iverson, but he deserved the chance to compete. Even if he hadn’t made the final roster of 12, his contributions to USA Basketball and his current performance warranted an invitation. At just under 31 years old, Iverson is still at the peak of his game and deserved better recognition.
