Exploring Northern Portugal's Golf Paradise

Ian Pemble delves into the exceptional value found in Oporto, North Portugal?"where stunning courses meet warm hospitality.

While my primary goal was to play golf in North Portugal, two standout aspects of the trip caught my attention beyond the fairways.

The first perk? Ryanair flies directly from Stansted. Though not ideal for those from the West Country, it's budget-friendly. In Porto, Ryanair has its own section with a café, bar, duty-free shop, and more.

The second highlight was the meticulous planning by English businessman Peter Evens, based in Porto. His company, PortGolf, offers comprehensive itineraries, including sightseeing, water sports, equestrian activities, go-karting, and port lodge visits (tastings included). He caters not only to golf enthusiasts but to entire families, ensuring everyone enjoys their time.

The Courses

Despite a focus on golf, the courses were surprisingly empty, especially on weekdays, offering a private experience.

Estela Golf Course:
Not the most visually appealing, Estela is a links course with a beach hidden behind a fence and adjacent agricultural land. Yet, its classic links design offers challenges that aficionados will appreciate.

Amarante Golf Course:
Carved into mountain greenery, Amarante is arguably the best-designed course, with a layout that makes the most of the available space. It features thrilling blind shots, scenic lakes, and formidable challenges like the uphill par-5 18th and the notoriously tricky par-4 fourth, dubbed "the volcano."

Ponte de Lima Golf Course:
The most breathtaking of the three, Ponte de Lima boasts a back nine of traditional parkland and a front nine carved through a pine forest. The standout is the par-4 ninth, where golfers aim 200 feet down to a landing area, followed by a downhill shot to a water-guarded green.

Choosing a Favorite:
Despite its aesthetic shortcomings, Estela emerged as my favorite, thanks to the intellectual demands of links golf. Unlike man-made courses, links golf offers creative freedom in shot selection, making every hole a unique challenge.

Beyond Golf

The trip was memorable, even for non-golfers. The variety of attractions ensures there's something for everyone.

Accommodation:
I stayed at the British Club, also known as the Oporto Cricket and Lawn Tennis Club. This historic escape, founded in 1855, offers a slice of Britain in the heart of the city. With its gentleman's club vibe, complete with wood paneling and excellent food, it felt like home?"especially when cheering with expats for the England vs. Austria football match.

Peter Evens can arrange accommodations ranging from basic to luxurious, ensuring top-notch service. I experienced his dedication firsthand when he secured two excellent bottles of port, saving me a surprising €15.

Course Details

- Ponte de Lima: 6,006 meters, par 71, mountainous forest, hotel at the course.
- Amarante: 5,085 meters, par 68, mountainous parkland.
- Estela: 6,017 meters, par 72, classic links.

PortGolf also offers access to three more 18-hole courses, including one in Spain, and smaller courses in Porto.

Getting There

Ryanair dominates the Porto route with budget-friendly fares. Pack wisely, as hand luggage is limited. My round trip was only £43, plus £34 for golf clubs. Stansted is easily accessible via the M4/M25/M11 or by train.

Plan your trip with Peter Evens at PortGolf. He customizes itineraries based on your preferences and budget, ensuring a seamless experience from arrival to departure. Highly recommended!
