Golf Ball Divers: Ventures Beneath the Surface
Exploring the Depths
Golf has fascinated and challenged players since its origins in Scotland. Throughout history, countless golf balls have been lost to water hazards, seemingly irretrievable to most. Yet, a few daring entrepreneurs have turned this into an opportunity, diving to recover these stray treasures.
The Sixty-Footer
Contracting for a company, I was warned about the deep and dark lakes formed from sand dredging at a course near a retirement community. My first dive was unremarkable, though navigating through the jagged rocks was tricky. Little did I know, my next dive would be far more challenging.
The second lake, part of a par-three hole, appeared promising with its abundance of balls visible in the clear water. I collected about 800 balls from the upper edges easily. However, when I ventured down, the terrain dropped off sharply, resembling a bottomless pit. It was daunting, but I knew missing out on the haul below meant losing potential income.
I braved the descent, plunging into the darkness, the water becoming colder as I descended for what felt like an eternity. Reaching the bottom, I felt around and discovered thousands of golf balls. With my air supply dwindling, I started my ascent carefully to avoid decompression issues. It was a close call?"in the end, I learned that no amount of balls was worth risking my life.
The Saltwater Adventure
In contrast, the saltwater courses promised clear waters and vibrant marine life due to their ocean connections. Each pond had its own character and challenges.
The Fish Bowl
This crystal-clear pond teemed with marine life. As I dove, I encountered fish, crabs, and even a camouflaged stingray. The balls were plentiful but covered in barnacles, making collection painful and difficult until I realized gloves were essential.
Sherwood Forest
Named for its underwater trees, this lake presented an unusual challenge?"a submerged forest. Navigating through it was like maneuvering an obstacle course, and I had to leave after a branch broke my mask strap.
Crocodile Concerns
The "Croc Shot" turned out to be aptly named when I unknowingly shared the water with a large crocodile. I realized the danger after speaking with a maintenance worker and decided to avoid such lakes in the future.
Spectacular Marine Life
At "Tarpon Alley," I encountered majestic schools of tarpon, reminiscent of a beautiful oceanic dive. Meanwhile, "Jelly Fish Lane" offered a sea of jellyfish, stinging relentlessly as I worked. The shallow water and strong currents were challenging, and I learned to dive this area during high tide for safety.
A Memorable Day
Diving in saltwater courses is both hazardous and fascinating. The blend of vivid marine life makes it a unique experience, though it's not without risks.
