Alignment: The Key Lesson in Golf
Overview
One of the most common issues I notice with novice golfers is improper alignment. This often leads them to develop flawed swings just to hit the ball on target. Proper alignment is crucial for improvement, as relying on swing flaws hinders progress.
Importance of Alignment
Inexperienced golfers often aim too far right. This typically happens because they rely on their arms to hit the ball, causing a pull to the left. By aiming right, they inadvertently compensate for this flaw rather than correcting it. Consequently, their perfect swings send the ball off course, while flawed swings appear successful. Without addressing these flaws, golfers can't reach their full potential. That's why alignment is key.
How to Check Your Alignment
To see if your alignment is correct:
1. Choose a target and set up as usual.
2. Place a club along your heels or toes.
3. Step back about 10 paces and check where the club points.
If the club is parallel left to your target, you're properly aligned. If it points right, you're misaligned.
Correcting Misalignment
To square your stance:
1. Pick a distant target.
2. Lay a club directly at the target and a second parallel to it. Ensure it's pointing correctly by stepping back a few paces.
3. Remove the first club, leaving the second one parallel to your target line.
Align your feet, knees, hips, and shoulders with the club on the ground. If your shots go left, you're pulling the ball due to over-reliance on your arms. If they go right, you're sliding your body too much laterally during impact.
Embrace the Discovery
Discovering misalignment might be surprising, but it's a positive revelation. It highlights a swing flaw you can now address, paving the way for better golfing in the future.
Until next time,
