The Cincinnati Reds are making waves in Major League Baseball, clearly stating their intent to contend this season. Just a week after acquiring Seattle's bullpen ace, Eddie Guardado, the team completed a significant eight-player trade. When a team trades away two starting players?"one a former All-Star and another with impressive stats of 16 home runs and 50 RBIs?"it's clear there's a strategic plan in motion.
Currently, the Reds are four games behind the leading Cardinals but are strong contenders for the wild card with the fourth-best record in the National League. General Manager Wayne Krivsky recognized the need to revamp an ineffective bullpen, and he's taken decisive action.
In this trade, Cincinnati received Washington's Gary Majewski, who has already pitched 55 innings in the first half, and Bill Bray, a promising former first-round draft pick. Alongside right-hander Majewski and lefty Bray, the Reds also acquired shortstop Royce Clayton, infielder Brendan Harris, and pitching prospect Daryl Thompson. Clayton, 36, will replace Felipe Lopez at shortstop and made his first All-Star team appearance last year.
Heading to Washington are Lopez and slugger Austin Kearns. The Reds also let go of reliever Ryan Wagner, a first-round draft pick in 2003. Nationals General Manager Jim Bowden, who previously ran the Reds, originally recruited all three players. Kearns, one of the team's cornerstone players during Bowden's tenure, was informed of the trade during a private meeting while relaxing in a whirlpool.
Majewski, 26, boasts a 3-2 record with a 3.58 ERA in 46 games. He led the Nationals with 79 appearances last season, recording a 2.93 ERA. Bray, 23, a highly-rated pitching prospect, was the 13th overall pick in the 2004 draft. In his first major league season, he has a 1-1 record with a 3.91 ERA in 19 relief appearances.
Kearns was batting .274 with 16 home runs and 50 RBIs, solidifying his position in right field after Krivsky traded outfielder Wily Mo Pena to Boston for starter Bronson Arroyo, who too represented the Reds in the All-Star game.
Lopez, batting .268 with nine home runs and 30 RBIs, has sometimes missed routine plays, contributing to the Reds’ low fielding ranks in the National League. Consistency in routine plays and improved middle relief could put the Reds in a strong position to challenge the Cardinals, who have been dealing with injury setbacks all season.
