Blackjack Terms - Part Three
Introduction
Welcome to the third installment of our series on Blackjack terms. Previously, we discussed the house's edge. Today, we’ll kick off with "Even Money," a slightly disappointing moment for me, especially when I have a Blackjack, and the dealer shows an Ace.Key Terms
Even Money
When you're dealt a Blackjack and the dealer has an Ace, you can opt for even money. This means your Blackjack pays out 1:1 instead of the usual 1.5:1. For example, a $15 bet gets you $15. If you decline even money and the dealer also has Blackjack, it results in a push.Expectation
This refers to the expected amount of money you might win or lose over time. We won't delve too deeply into the math here.Face Cards
In Blackjack, face cards?"Jacks, Queens, and Kings?"are each worth 10 points. While they have no distinct role unless you're playing side games like Royal Match, they’re crucial for forming strong hands.First Base
This is the first seat to receive cards from the dealer, positioned to their left as they deal clockwise.Flat Betting
Flat betting involves wagering the same amount on every hand. While fine for casual fun and free drinks, varying your bets can be more strategic.Heads Up
This scenario commonly occurs online when you're the sole player at the table, playing directly against the dealer. In physical casinos, some players prefer empty tables, moving around to find spots where they can play alone.High Roller
High rollers, also known as whales, place substantial bets, often wagering millions. Casinos may reserve tables exclusively for them.Hit
To "hit" means to draw another card to strengthen your hand.Hole Card
This is the dealer’s face-down card, adding an element of suspense?"unless you're playing a double face-up game.Hot Deck
The opposite of a cold deck, a hot deck is favorable to the player, encouraging bigger bets.House Edge
As previously mentioned, every casino game comes with a house edge. The casino maintains an advantage, though some games, like Blackjack, offer a lower edge compared to others, such as Roulette.Insurance
Often considered a poor bet, insurance is an option when the dealer shows an Ace. It costs half your wager and pays off if the dealer has a Blackjack. However, if the dealer lacks a Blackjack, you lose the insurance bet, and your winnings are reduced.Join us next time as we continue with the fourth part of our Blackjack terms series.
