Fly fishing offers an otherworldly experience, capable of mending any soul. Yet, there's always the tale of the one that got away.
The One That Got Away
I've braved the crowds, witnessed trout swimming in the crystal-clear waters, and faced defeat from some of the most cunning fish on the Green River below the Flaming Gorge Dam. On a float trip last fall, I truly understood the meaning of "the one that got away."
In my decade of fly fishing, this encounter stood out as extraordinary. Not only was the trout enormous, but it was also fiercely determined?"the most aggressive I’d ever seen. Imagine a perfect scene: a large fish rising on the river's left side, about 50 feet downstream. We positioned ourselves, I made the perfect cast, and the drift was spot on. Suddenly, the trout leapt from the water.
You might wonder, why is this the ultimate "one that got away" story? It's not about the fish's size or the duration of the struggle?"it's about the unexpected twist.
Just before my fly reached this incredible fish, an Osprey swooped in and snagged it right in front of me! Perhaps the bird misjudged its catch, as the fish proved too much to handle.
The Osprey's talons locked into the fish's back. With incredible effort, it lifted the trout but soon plunged into the river. The determined fish dragged the bird under. Astonishingly, the Osprey surfaced, still gripping its prey, and made another attempt. As it tried to drag the fish across 10 feet of the river, it once again submerged.
Remarkably, the fish managed to flip the Osprey over, coming partially out of the water while the bird was completely submerged. In a powerful twist, the trout broke free, and the Osprey, valuing breath over its quarry, released the fish. The waterlogged bird retreated to a nearby perch for rest.
We all stood in shock, speechless. Now, that's a "one that got away" story to remember!
