There’s nothing quite like the thrill of fishing for striped marlin in Cabo San Lucas. If you've ever caught one, you know the fight is fierce. This morning, my alarm blared at 4 AM, signaling the start of another day dedicated to tag and release fishing with friends. Being out on the water, gathering data on these incredible creatures, is a privilege.
Our captain was already at the docks, prepping the boat and securing bait from local suppliers. Once we arrived, we quickly untied the boat and set off. As we left the harbor, we discussed our fishing spot for the day. Despite most day boats heading north to the Pacific side, we decided on the famed Golden Gate spot. Known for its abundance of fish, it can get crowded, but we arrived early enough to have it mostly to ourselves.
When we saw birds feeding about a mile north, we followed, hoping to find marlin. Soon, we were in the midst of what can only be described as marlin madness. I spotted about 15 marlin, with more likely below. We switched to live bait, matching what they were feeding on. Within moments, we hooked a large marlin, and the excitement led to two more quick catches. Chaos ensued as three of us battled the fish while another prepared the tags. By the end of the day, we had tagged and released over 10 striped marlin?"an unforgettable experience.
