We embarked on a 64-foot Viking enclosed bridge sport fishing boat?"a top-of-the-line, brand-new vessel equipped with everything needed for a perfect trip. We gathered in San Diego, prepared our gear, and arrived at the boat around 2 a.m. for an early start. After a few days of stocking the boat with food and fishing equipment, we finally departed at 3 a.m.
Our destination: Magdalena Bay, renowned for its superb fishing. Although we did some fishing on the way, our focus was on reaching Mag Bay, where we knew the real action awaited. After three thrilling days on the water, we finally arrived.
Having gone without a proper meal for 72 hours, I cooked a feast upon arrival, which put everyone to sleep. Rested and recharged, we set our sights on tagging and releasing as many marlin and dorado as possible?"a goal we eagerly pursued. That night, after a hearty dinner, I stayed up to prepare bait, a decision that proved invaluable.
The next day, we ventured into the Magdalena Bay area. It was a perfect day, with birds guiding us to the best spots. Once our gear was ready, we started fishing with live bait. Suddenly, the water erupted with one of the largest schools of dorado I’d ever seen. The fish were so plentiful that they devoured the bait before it even touched the water. It was an astonishing sight.
After exhausting our dorado tags, we shifted to striped marlin. This year, the waters were teeming with activity, resulting in an extraordinary feeding frenzy. We successfully tagged 14 marlin and countless dorado before the crew, exhausted, decided to head back to the bay for the night. A delicious fish dinner was followed by a much-needed rest.
