When I was young, I met an old man who fished at Buckeye Lake, Ohio, and he caught more bass than anyone else around. His secret? Fishing around boat docks. Despite his lures being worn out?"many stripped of paint and some reduced to bare wood from hitting the docks?"they worked wonders.
Boat docks offer shade, creating a secure and low-light environment for bass. These structures also serve as strategic spots for bass to ambush prey. If you notice rod holders or lights at a dock, it's possible there’s some hidden structure below, like a brush pile or rocks. Use a trolling motor to get close or simply drift up, then flip or pitch your lure with precision.
Effective lures for dock fishing include jigs, worms, crankbaits, and spinnerbaits. Aim to cast as far under the dock as possible, ensuring your lure bumps against the dock’s posts on the retrieve. The erratic movement often triggers strikes. For those using crankbaits, try bending the eye to make it run deeper beneath the dock, reaching the fish that lurk there.
Today, there are specialized lures, such as the coffin bill lure, that are perfectly suited for dock fishing. Docks remain one of my favorite fishing spots, and it seems bass are equally fond of them.
