Easy Gulf Coast Grouper Fishing - Part I

Introduction

If you're looking for some of the best grouper fishing, the Gulf Coast of Florida is the place to be. With generally calm waters for most of the year, excluding our extended hurricane season, it's an ideal fishing spot. Let's dive into the essentials of Gulf Coast grouper fishing.

Gear Essentials

Your setup doesn't have to be complicated. A moderately stout rod is key?"too stiff, and it affects the bait's action. I recommend using a 40-pound line on the reel, paired with a 100-pound shock leader and an 8/0 hook. While live bait is my preference, options like jigs, spoons, and heavy trolling lures work as well.

Preparing for the Trip

After getting your gear, guests, and boat ready, it’s time to catch some bait. "Junk" fish, such as blue runners, sand perch, and lizard fish, make excellent bait. Grouper aren't particularly fussy eaters, although they do have preferences. Start your day with a large piece of squid, about the size of your open hand?"it's tough and stays on the hook well. Check your local fish market for squid availability.

Finding the Bait

We typically begin at the 45-foot mark and search for bait. It often requires patience, as there are usually no clear indicators of where the bait is. Most baitfish stay on the bottom unless you find sardines, in which case a Sabaki rig is effective. Cut your squid into small strips and see if any small baitfish respond. You may need to move around, generally about 300-500 feet at a time, until you start getting bites.

Head to the Fishing Spot

Once you've stocked up on baitfish, head to your fishing area, around the 100-foot depth. We use a series of GPS marks in a 3-5 mile square area. If there's no bite after 20-30 minutes, we move to another GPS mark nearby. (Apologies, but my GPS coordinates are a secret!)

Conclusion

Stay tuned for Part II, where we’ll continue exploring this fishing adventure. Happy fishing!
