Crickets: The Unsung Hero of Live Bait Fishing
Exploring New Horizons Beyond Worms
When it comes to live bait fishing, worms often steal the spotlight. However, an array of effective options exists beyond the humble crawler, including minnows, crawdads, and crickets. I discovered crickets as a unique and effective bait, thanks to a good friend named Tom.
A Memorable Introduction to Cricket Fishing
Tom introduced me to cricket fishing while we were stream fishing for trout at the picturesque Silver Fork near Kyburz, California. As we prepared to fish, Tom demonstrated his technique for using crickets as bait.
He picked a black cricket from the cage, saying, "You just run the hook under the collar." Intrigued, I learned that the “collar” is the area just behind a cricket's head. The trick is to gently insert the hook under this collar without harming the cricket. Surprisingly, it was easier than it sounded.
Mastering the Technique
I instinctively reached for a bobber, but Tom quickly corrected me. The key was to let the cricket drift with the current, using only a light sinker if necessary. As I watched Tom expertly cast his line, the cricket floated naturally down the stream before a fish swiftly struck. Fish on!
Expanding the Use of Crickets
Since then, I’ve discovered that crickets are versatile bait, effective for catching various fish such as Panfish and Bream. This approach differs slightly, as anglers often use a bobber or float with a
6, #8, or #10 hook. By placing a lightweight split shot about six inches from the cricket, you can achieve a natural descent, adjusting the bobber depth as needed to find the perfect spot.
The Appeal of Variety
Fish, like us, enjoy a varied diet. Live bait, especially crickets, often proves more enticing than artificial options, prompting aggressive strikes. So, next time you're setting out to fish, consider crickets as a lively and effective alternative to worms.
