Colorado Fly Fishing: Bait Huckin’ vs. Fly Fishin’
A Fishing Adventure Gone Awry at Steamboat Lake
It started as a typical fishing trip, but turned into one of those days where everything seems to go wrong. While others were reeling in fish effortlessly, I found myself losing six or eight of my priciest streamers, caught in a downpour, and?"to top it all off?"sinking the boat. Yes, I got completely skunked at Steamboat Lake over Memorial Day weekend.
Determined to outdo the bait huckers using worms and power bait, I confidently cast my flies, believing a well-chosen fly could perform just as well. Unfortunately, I was mistaken. Despite a frenzy of fish rising on a midge hatch, my perfect replicas were ignored. I watched as a group of 12-year-olds filled their stringers with 18 fish, convincing myself it was just a lake thing?"I don't frequent lakes often.
I usually have better fortune with streamers in fast-moving waters, so I set off for one of the area's tributaries, hoping to get the boat far enough to make some effective casts. However, the wind had other plans. Frustrated, I lost several of my best streamers in the dense brush surrounding the creek's mouth. The strong current made it impossible to retrieve them.
On our way back to camp, boats with stringers full of fish cruised past us. Were they rubbing it in, or just tenderizing their catch? I began questioning my commitment to fly fishing. Picking up my 5-year-old son from the dock, I grabbed a styrofoam container of nightcrawlers, ready to let him fish with bait before I gave in and used it myself. Surprisingly, we had no luck even with the bait, and then the rain came.
As lightning approached, we headed to shore to escape the whitecaps forming on the lake. Our boat, which we got for free and knew little about handling in rain, was left near our camp outside the no-wake zone. We soon learned it’s best to leave a boat in a protected cove. It took on 300 to 400 gallons of water from waves and boat wakes, sinking in 18 inches of water. I didn’t even know a boat could sink in that depth! Our gear was strewn along the shore, including an Orvis waist pack containing over 500 flies, all of which had to be opened and dried on our truck dashboards.
Wearily, we bailed out the boat, loaded the truck, and hauled our drenched gear and bruised egos home.
Next Memorial Day, we're heading back to the river!
