Experience the Thrill in Cherokee County: Bike Park Offers Woodstock a New Playground
Discover the Adventure
Mountain biking can be enjoyed almost anywhere, but there's nothing quite like navigating winding, hand-built single tracks through the lush forests of North Georgia. However, finding the right place to ride can be a challenge. Many public parks in the Southeast have banned mountain bikes due to concerns about trail erosion and conflicts with hikers.
A Solution in Woodstock
In Woodstock, Georgia, the solution was to create a dedicated space for biking enthusiasts. Enter the Southeast Off-Road Bicycle Organization (SORBA), which has been instrumental in developing the popular Blankets Creek trail system along the shores of Lake Allatoona. SORBA has also been involved in crafting trails at Atlanta's Morningside Nature Preserve and Roswell's Big Creek Park.
Explore Blankets Creek
Blankets Creek Park, almost entirely crafted by volunteers, stands as Cherokee County’s only designated bike park and draws over 100,000 bikers annually. Located just off Sixes Road in Woodstock and about 25 miles from Atlanta, this park is a hub for riders of all levels?"families, couples, solo adventurers, and experienced cyclists.
The park offers trails for everyone, from beginners to seasoned pros. Currently, three loops are available, with a fourth in development to provide a total of 16 miles of off-road excitement. The upcoming North Loop, set to open in spring 2008, promises intense challenges with steep climbs and daring descents, suitable only for the most experienced riders.
Beginners can enjoy the Mosquito Flats and Mosquito Bite Trails (a combined 1.3 miles) for a leisurely ride, while the Dwelling Loop (3.5 miles) caters to intermediate cyclists. Advanced riders can test their skills on the South Loop (4 miles), filled with switchbacks, rock gardens, roots, and log crossings.
While previous trails were meticulously built by hand, the new North Loop is being forged with a mini-excavator, significantly reducing the construction time.
How to Get There
Blankets Creek is conveniently located in Woodstock on Lake Allatoona. From I-75 north, merge onto I-575 north, and take exit 11. Turn left on Sixes Road, drive approximately 1.8 miles, and turn left into the trailhead parking lot. The park is open daily but closes during rain. Trail directions change daily, so check before riding. A $1 suggested donation is appreciated.
