Escape to Paradise: Life on McLeod's Island
Have you ever felt the need to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life? Back in March/April 1978, Mother Earth News shared a remarkable story about a couple who did just that by purchasing McLeod's Island, a 90-acre haven off the coast of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.
Living off the land, the couple raised a few animals and relied on the island for most of their sustenance. However, island life posed its challenges:
“The sea’s restlessness isn’t just a saying. We've witnessed a glassy bay transform into a whirlwind of currents and waves in mere moments. We've also seen the bay freeze over in hours during December.
Winters are unpredictable here. In 1976, spring-like thaws left our bay blocked with slush?"too thick for boats, but too thin to walk on. We were isolated for three months, from January to March. Conversely, last winter’s cold snap turned the bay into solid ice, allowing us to walk to the mainland for mail and supplies whenever needed.”
While many of us now enjoy the flexibility of working from anywhere thanks to the Internet, this couple didn’t have that luxury. Despite the lack of information about their current whereabouts, their story remains a testament to the sacrifices involved in pursuing such a unique lifestyle. Life is full of tough choices, and while buying an island might not be on my horizon, it’s fascinating to imagine such an adventure.
