The Shield DVD Review
Overview
"The Shield" has garnered critical acclaim, securing four Emmy nominations and four Golden Globe nominations, including Best Television Series - Drama. Created by Shawn Ryan, known for his work on "Nash Bridges" and "Angel," the series made history in 2003 as the first basic cable show to win a Golden Globe for Best Drama Series, standing alongside giants like "The Sopranos" and "Sex And The City."
Introduction
Set in a gritty Los Angeles police precinct, "The Shield" blurs the lines between right and wrong. The show focuses on the power dynamics between a group of corrupt yet effective cops and their new leader, Capt. David Aceveda (Benito Martinez). Det. Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis), an unconventional and rule-bending leader, heads the Strike Team, often clashing with Aceveda, who balances his political ambitions with the need to clean up the precinct.
CCH Pounder's veteran character, Det. Claudette Wyms, respects Mackey's unorthodox methods but is savvy enough to maneuver through the precinct's political minefields. For the 2005 season, the cast was joined by Glenn Close as Capt. Monica Rawling, adding depth to the series' intense narrative.
Season Highlights
The Shield DVD includes a host of gripping episodes, starting with the season premiere where the Strike Team tightens its grip on the precinct. Aceveda tries to tackle corruption by enlisting an informer, Det. Terry Crowley, which tragically results in Crowley's death. Meanwhile, Wyms and her partner, Det. "Dutch" Wagenbach (Jay Karnes), probe the murder of a woman and uncover her daughter's sale to a child molester by her father.
Notable episodes from Season 1 include "Dawg Days," where Mackey negotiates a truce between rival gangs, and "Dragonchasers," focusing on Mackey's efforts to help a crack addict regain custody of her son as Dutch hunts a serial killer.
