Review: Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman
Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman is a standout live-action television series inspired by DC Comics. Premiering on ABC on December 13, 1993, the show enjoyed a four-season run, each with 22 episodes.
Dean Cain shines as Superman, an extraterrestrial with extraordinary abilities who assumes the guise of Clark Kent, a humble news reporter at Metropolis' leading newspaper, the Daily Planet. Alongside him is Teri Hatcher as Lois Lane, a driven and ambitious reporter unaware of Clark's secret identity as Superman.
The series also explores Clark's visits to Smallville, his childhood home, where he was raised by his adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, portrayed by K Callan and Eddie Jones. Adding tension is the formidable Lex Luthor, played by John Shea, Superman's wealthy arch-nemesis. While action scenes are present, the show’s charm lies in its romance and humor, which captured a loyal female fan base.
A highlight is Lane Smith’s memorable performance as Perry White, the news editor-in-chief. For the first time, Perry is given depth beyond being the typical boss, forging a fatherly bond with his reporters, especially the youthful Jimmy Olsen. Many still regard Smith’s portrayal as the definitive version of Perry White.
Though the series transitioned to DVD years after it aired, its quality remains commendable. While its special effects may not match the spectacle of modern television and film, they were impressive given the era’s budget constraints.
