Just Friends DVD Review
Overview
"Just Friends" is a charming romantic comedy that delves into the complexities of the infamous friend zone in male/female relationships. Directed by Roger Kumble, known for the acclaimed film "Cruel Intentions" (1999), the movie offers a fresh premise. While it may not be the most hilarious comedy in recent years, it certainly delivers some genuinely funny moments. Written by Adam Tex Davis, who makes his screenwriting debut after working extensively in cinematography and TV, the film is an enjoyable watch despite not quite reaching the comedic heights of films like "There’s Something About Mary" or "Meet The Parents." Still, it’s worth your time.
Plot Summary
The story follows Chris Brander (played by Ryan Reynolds), a formerly overweight high school student from New Jersey who harbors feelings for his classmate Jamie Palamino (Amy Smart). Stuck in the friend zone, Chris’s attempt to confess his feelings at their 1995 graduation party backfires, leading him to leave town in anger with the intention of reinventing himself.
Fast forward ten years to 2005, and Chris has transformed into a successful, charming record executive living in Los Angeles. With a lavish lifestyle and beautiful companions, he seems to have it all. However, he's reluctantly tasked with supervising a troublesome pop star, Samantha James (Anna Faris). Their flight to Paris is unexpectedly grounded in New Jersey, forcing Chris to confront his past and his lingering feelings for Jamie.
Back home, armed with newfound confidence, Chris attempts to win Jamie’s heart. However, his efforts are hindered by his inability to be genuine, as well as the presence of a rival suitor, Dusty (Chris Klein), a seemingly nice guy from high school. Ultimately, it’s Chris himself who poses the greatest obstacle to achieving his dreams.
Analysis
"Just Friends" adheres to a familiar genre and offers a predictable ending. However, viewers don't typically watch romantic comedies for suspense; they come for laughter. If you appreciated Ryan Reynolds in "National Lampoon's Van Wilder," you'll likely enjoy his performance here. Although the script may not be as sharp, Reynolds brings charisma to the role reminiscent of Owen Wilson, complemented by a deadpan delivery that Leslie Nielsen would admire.
The film features several memorable comedic moments, including a scene where Chris makes a dramatic return to an ice rink after an embarrassing mishap, and another where an unexpected encounter during a viewing of "The Notebook" leaves audiences in stitches. Adam Davis deserves praise for these standout scenes.
Though "Just Friends" may not achieve cult classic status, it provides plenty of laughs and fulfills its promise as a feel-good comedy.
