Title: Hostel Movie Review
Summary:
In "Hostel," two American backpackers, Josh (Derek Richardson) and Paxton (Jay Hernandez), along with their Icelandic companion, Oli, are drawn to a Slovakian hostel with promises of eager women. The trio embarks on a carefree European adventure before their college graduation, indulging in sex, drugs, and anything else that presents itself. Upon reaching Slovakia, Josh and Paxton meet two alluring women, Natalya and Svetlana, and soon things take a bizarre turn.
Review:
"Hostel" is a brisk 1 hour and 35-minute rollercoaster. Any longer and it might have risked overstaying its welcome. I watched it with a friend who was thoroughly grossed out and startled, perfectly in line with the film's reputation. Personally, having seen many horror films, I found it somewhat tame.
Jay Hernandez delivers a strong performance as Paxton, though his character makes some questionable decisions. I won't spoil anything, but you'll see what I mean. The plot is somewhat predictable, yet this predictability contributes to its charm. It unfolds as anticipated, satisfying in a way as characters get their comeuppance.
Final thought: If the characters had sported Canadian flag patches on their backpacks, they might have avoided some of their troubles. Americans seem particularly valuable in this grotesque setting.
Director: Eli Roth
