I had a hectic day?"groceries to buy, meals to cook, laundry to do, clients to meet, and money to earn. So when I received emails from Amnesty International and the International Rescue Committee urging me to contact my senators about sending UN peacekeeping forces to Darfur, I felt irritated and overwhelmed.
Then I paused. Millions are enduring unimaginable suffering, and this is a cause I’ve long supported. How could I be annoyed? What was actually happening within me?
I realized that my irritation masked feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. Despite the attention drawn to this genocide, and despite countless petitions and rallies, the situation in Darfur has deteriorated. I questioned the impact of two more calls, especially to senators likely already in favor of increasing aid.
I understood it was a privilege to feel helpless while millions are tortured, raped, starved, and murdered. How could I do nothing simply because I believed my efforts insufficient?
I resolved to act?"not only for the people of Darfur but for myself. I prioritized and called my senators, then emailed them for good measure. I spent the remainder of the day forgiving myself for indulging in hopelessness. By day's end, my self-forgiveness was still a work in progress.
