Recently, I transitioned from a stable job to a new role at a promising startup, attracted by a significantly higher salary. Working in IT, I left behind comfort and stability, betting on a firm I believe will succeed. The company recognized the need to invest in top talent, readily meeting my salary, benefits, and stock options expectations. However, I soon discovered that while they didn't skimp on compensation, they did on the office amenities.
I can tolerate the tiny cubicle and the lack of natural light that makes me feel like a cave dweller. I can even do without a cafeteria, water cooler, or coffee maker. But what I truly miss is my old telephone.
My previous phone was a marvel: a multi-line, LCD-displaying, caller-ID-equipped powerhouse with more features than a luxury car. Unfortunately, my new phone offers none of these conveniences. There’s no transfer or hold button, no display to identify incoming calls, no headset, and no electronic directory. In essence, the only thing separating this phone from a novelty Garfield phone is the cartoon shape.
A proper office phone system would vastly improve my productivity and make my workdays much easier. The current setup is so poorly automated that only a tiny fraction of the calls I receive are actually meant for me. I frequently receive emails from colleagues asking why I haven't returned calls for messages I never received.
The saying, "you don't know what you've got until it's gone," couldn't be truer. Since joining the company, I've consistently lobbied to upgrade the phone system, but without success. It seems I might be the only one missing what I once had.
I suspect others have faced a similar situation after a job change. If you've also lost a beloved phone in your career journey, I feel your pain. I'd share my number so we could commiserate, but you probably wouldn't reach me on this outdated phone anyway.
