Building Multi-Layered Customer Relationships
Achieving sales targets is crucial, whether on a weekly, monthly, or quarterly basis. However, this does not mean quickly moving on after a sale. Instead, focus on building a deeper relationship with your customers.
Engage and Understand
As you close a deal, take time to understand what your customers need. Engage them in conversation. People generally enjoy discussing their interests, from jobs and family to pets and hobbies. This can reveal valuable insights into how you can better serve them.
For example, during my time in banking, whenever a customer came in to open a checking account, I would start by gathering their information to determine if they were new or existing customers. If they were new, it often indicated that their other financial services were with another bank.
Strategic Profiling
This is where profiling comes into play. I would inquire about other institutions they worked with and highlight the benefits and features of our products compared to theirs. It was essential to listen to their reasons for choosing our bank, as it often stemmed from dissatisfaction with their previous one.
I never forced products on them. Instead, I took detailed notes to follow up later. Customers would leave with a welcome packet, including brochures and my business cards for future reference.
Gradual Relationship Building
With some initial business secured, our focus should shift towards nurturing the relationship. Gradually identify their needs through careful prospecting, and introduce suitable products at the right time. This approach prevents overwhelming them and builds trust.
For existing customers, I examined their current offerings and discussed the advantages of additional products, keeping thorough notes for future follow-ups.
Consistent Prospecting
Whenever you interact with a customer, prospect them to understand what they lack. Educate them about products that fit their needs. Document your conversations and use this information to engage them meaningfully in the future.
Prospecting is about identifying unmet needs and addressing them effectively. Once you understand their requirements, everything else falls into place more easily.
