Fluent Speech and How to Achieve It
Introduction
Achieving fluent speech can be a challenge, especially for those with speech impediments like stammering or stuttering. I'm Steve Hill, and I personally struggled with stuttering from age four to twenty-two. Despite regular speech therapy, I continued to face difficulties until I found my own path to fluency.
My Journey
Living with a stutter was frustrating, as my fluency varied. I could speak well with my then-girlfriend but struggled conversing with her parents. Interestingly, my speech improved when I had been drinking, leaving me puzzled about the inconsistency.
Despite reading extensively about speech impediments and consulting therapists, I was often told that overcoming a stutter was impossible. This negativity didn’t sit well with me because I knew I could speak fluently in certain situations.
Finding Inspiration
My turning point came when I watched an interview with Bruce Willis, who shared his own battle with stuttering. He had managed to conquer it as a teenager, which inspired me to believe I could do the same.
Overcoming Stuttering
I dedicated nearly a year to studying positive thinking and the habits of great speakers. Through this effort, I achieved fluency. Now, I use my experience to help others overcome their speech challenges.
Conclusion
Fluency is achievable with determination and the right mindset. If you're battling a speech impediment, know that you can find your path to fluent speech. Remember, persistence and a positive outlook can make all the difference.
