Article:
Born Alexander Coe in Wales in September 1969, Sasha first encountered the vibrant house music scene at Manchester's legendary Hacienda club in the late 1980s. The hypnotic atmosphere, complete with smoke machines and strobe lights, immediately captivated him. "It had a rebellious spirit compared to mainstream pop," he recalls.
Motivated by this scene, Sasha moved to Manchester, immersing himself in the burgeoning house music movement. He began DJing at a local club under the moniker "Sasha."
Breakthrough and Recognition
Sasha's first significant opportunity arose in 1991 with a residency at Shelly's in Stoke. His distinctive style, which involved layering acapellas over Italian piano house tracks, quickly garnered him a dedicated fan base. That year, Sasha became the first DJ to grace the cover of Mixmag.
His initial foray into music production came with the track "Appolonia" under the alias BM:Ex on VC Recordings. This epic track, featuring various remixes, began to shape Sasha's trademark style: long, fluid, and hypnotic compositions with gated vocals and dynamic synths.
Renaissance and Collaboration
In 1993, Sasha landed a residency at Renaissance, where he met John Digweed. Together, they produced the groundbreaking "Renaissance: The Mix Collection," a three-CD compilation that included their tracks and remixes.
The duo later launched the Northern Exposure brand, hosting club nights that toured the UK. Their mix CDs, produced with software rather than traditional decks, set a trend in the industry.
In 1994, Sasha released "Magic" and "High Ground" on Deconstruction Records, showcasing his signature progressive house sound: extended intros and outros, rich pianos, and emotional vocals.
Collaborations and Innovation
A pivotal friendship with producer BT began in 1995, leading to Sasha remixing BT's "Embracing The Sunshine" and co-producing the B-side of Sasha’s hit "Be As One." That year, they collaborated on one of the most celebrated remixes: the Atraxion Future Mix of Seal's "I'm Alive," featuring massive builds, drops, and a singalong chorus.
Between 1996 and 1998, Sasha's work took a more underground approach until 1999, when he released the "Xpander EP." The title track, with its uplifting synths, attracted a new wave of fans.
In 2000, Sasha partnered with Darren Emerson of Underworld to create "Scorchio," another uplifting synth-driven track that charted in the UK.
Continuing Legacy
Today, Sasha remains a dynamic force in the music world, both as a producer and a DJ, continuing to inspire and entertain fans worldwide.
