Understanding the Definition of Marketing
If you asked people to define marketing, you'd likely get a variety of incomplete answers. Many might mention advertising or promotion as marketing's main components, but that's only part of the picture. Marketing encompasses everything you do to get your product or service noticed by customers, including advertising and promotion.
In a textbook, marketing is broken down into what are known as the 4 Ps: Product, Price, Placement, and Promotion. This concept was defined by a Harvard business professor in the 1960s and represents the marketing mix.
- Product: This refers to what you are offering, including aspects like warranties and guarantees.
- Price: Choosing an appropriate price for the product, which might include considerations beyond money, such as time and energy.
- Placement: Distribution of the product, including how it reaches the customer through retail, online, and other channels.
- Promotion: Encompasses advertising, publicity, selling philosophies, and branding.
This 4 P model is particularly effective for consumer goods of moderate cost. High-end items might require adjustments to this model, and marketing services involves an expanded approach with three additional Ps.
- People: In service marketing, interactions with every person, including customers and staff, become crucial.
- Process: The method of delivering the service.
- Physical Evidence: Testimonials and case studies that provide proof of the service's benefits, which is essential since services are intangible.
Web marketing introduces its own set of Ps:
- Personalization: Allows customers to create customized products.
- Participation: Engaging customers through a company's website and activities.
- Predictive Modeling: Using mathematical formulas to forecast sales, though it’s often behind the scenes.
- Peer-to-Peer: Involves social networking and word-of-mouth, which are vital for online marketing success.
Understanding these components provides a clearer picture of what marketing truly encompasses across different contexts.
