During my five and a half years in the networking and home-based business industry, I've witnessed a wide range of opinions about network marketing. Some people are fervent supporters, while others are vehement critics, often labeling all companies as pyramid schemes. On the flip side, respected authors like Robert Allen, Mark Victor Hansen, and Robert Kiyosaki praise the industry.
At its core, network marketing is akin to a franchise business model. It offers a replicable system that hinges on consistently repeating specific activities. A crucial measure of a network marketing company’s legitimacy is whether it has a substantial number of repeat customers who purchase products even if they don't receive a commission. Successful companies like Amway, Melaleuca, PrePaid Legal, and USANA have amassed millions in sales to satisfied customers, many of whom don’t earn through the business.
So, why does the industry seem to bear a negative reputation? The issue doesn’t stem from the franchise model itself, which can be likened to "micro-franchising." This model has a low entry cost and promising revenue potential. However, it also attracts many who may not be adequately prepared or suited for business ownership.
Typically, these individuals may:
- Have struggled in previous business endeavors with little savings to invest.
- Lack prior experience in owning or operating a business.
- Have no experience in sales.
- Be unfamiliar with building business relationships beyond typical workplace interactions.
- Be dissatisfied with their current income.
- Hold unrealistic expectations about the effort and reward involved.
In my experience, inexperienced network marketers often:
- Oversell the opportunity.
- Discuss the business inappropriately in social settings.
- Appear desperate.
- Focus too much on recruiting new members, neglecting existing customers.
- Provide inaccurate or misleading information about their business.
What’s the Solution?
