Well-Being: The Essential Element Missing for Today’s Entrepreneur
Summary:
Well-being, a term often explored in philosophy, refers to what is fundamentally good for an individual. It is both subjective and personal.
As a business coach, I’m privileged to work with successful, talented, and passionate entrepreneurs every day. These individuals are driven, visionary, and ethical. However, their intense focus on business often leaves them unbalanced and unhealthy, impacting their relationships, environment, finances, and even their beloved enterprises. The signs are clear to everyone around them?"tired eyes, extra weight, and stress-induced expressions are common.
Everyone notices: employees, customers, spouses, children, and certainly me, their business coach. My clients often share their packed schedules, seeking strategies for time management. Beyond their pragmatic words lies a plea: “I can’t handle more; I’m exhausted. When is it my time? I need space.” The desperation is audible, even through a phone call.
At some point, the conversation shifts. I ask, “How do you take care of yourself?” or “What keeps you energized and focused?” Often, there’s a pause, followed by stuttering replies: “Well, I took my kids to the zoo last month... I guess I get energy from work… that's all I seem to do,” closing with a sigh.
These are intelligent, powerful, successful people, yet their employees and spouses remain silent. Perhaps a friend hints at needing a break, but no one explicitly states, “Take time off; you look exhausted.”
I understand. I also run a small business. The to-do list never ends, and society often equates self-sacrifice with success, emphasizing hard work, wealth accumulation, and advancement. Even prioritizing family can leave one drained.
Physically thriving requires movement and nutrition. Spiritually and mentally, prayer or meditation can help. Emotionally, loving relationships fortify us. So, why do we neglect well-being? Is the payoff worth the cost?
In every conversation, I encourage clients to carve out personal time. Perhaps they’ll go for a morning walk or cut out soda. Sometimes, they just need permission to make significant changes. The result? Enhanced business productivity and profit, along with a more fulfilling life.
If you see yourself here, apply the same intelligence, creativity, and drive used to build your business to nurture yourself. Trust that fellow entrepreneurs have embraced this well-being journey, improving not only their businesses but, more importantly, their lives.
