The Effective Executive

Summary

An executive’s effectiveness is deeply tied to their ability to communicate. Whether speaking one-on-one or addressing a group, they need to connect in ways that inspire and motivate. The aim is to present themselves as credible role models while effectively conveying the organization's message.

Article Body

In today’s fast-paced business world, an executive’s success hinges on their communication skills. Whether interacting with individuals or addressing large audiences, the key is to communicate in a way that is both inspiring and credible. Executives need to embody the values of their organization and motivate their teams effectively.

While some may have a natural talent for public speaking, others develop their skills through experience. Regardless of their starting point, all executives can enhance their impact by understanding the principles of effective communication. By adapting to the audience's moods and expectations, anyone can make a lasting impression.

For over a decade, I have been leading a powerful course at the Canadian Management Centre called "Effective Executive Speaking." Initially developed by Peter Urs Bender, Canada’s leading public speaker and author of "Secrets of Power Presentations," the course has become a cornerstone for executives seeking to improve their speaking skills. Together with George Torok, a dynamic speaker and business consultant, we have been facilitating this transformative experience.

The three-day course is offered multiple times a year and attracts executives, department heads, and mid-level managers eager to improve their communication skills. There's a palpable excitement when participants first gather, as George and I introduce fundamental principles. We then divide the group for more intimate sessions. Each participant speaks on selected topics and receives immediate, personalized feedback. Presentations are recorded for private review, enhancing the learning process.

Participants join our course for two primary reasons. Firstly, they often feel nervous or uncomfortable when speaking publicly. Secondly, they recognize the need for more effective communication as they advance in their careers. Our course addresses both concerns by building confidence and providing motivation to improve.

"Effective Executive Speaking" tackles common challenges such as nervousness, over-preparation, and handling difficult questions. Participants explore their relationship with tools like PowerPoint and learn to manage physical signs of anxiety, such as trembling or a racing heart. We address the question: How do professional speakers excel, and what can we learn from them?

By the end of the course, participants speak with newfound ease, confidence, and effectiveness. They acquire techniques to enhance every future presentation and learn to identify areas for improvement in themselves and others.

George Torok and I share general principles and specific practices to develop essential communication skills. With his extensive experience as a business consultant, George co-authored "Secrets of Power Marketing" with Peter Urs Bender. My approach focuses on recognizing and building upon individual strengths in body, voice, and mind, suggesting innovative ways to engage and motivate an audience.

In summary, effective communication is critical for today’s executives. With targeted learning and practical experience, anyone can refine their skills and become a more impactful speaker.
