The Best Part of an Executive Coach's Day
Word Count: 399
Summary:
For me, the most rewarding moment in an executive coach's day is witnessing a client's powerful realization and newfound insights into self-improvement.
These insights typically arise in two ways:
1. Through well-crafted, open-ended questions that prompt the client to have their own revelation.
2. By making an observation that opens up new possibilities for the client.
When this occurs, the true essence of executive coaching is fulfilled. You can conduct brief, impactful meetings with executives, creating incredible value without intrusive consulting projects.
For example, recently, I worked with a long-time client to enhance the performance of a new business unit. As I posed questions, he realized he wasn’t holding his team accountable for achieving their goals. This insight helped him see how he could better engage his team and focus on activities for optimal results.
The moment he grasped this, his entire demeanor changed?"he appeared more relaxed and confident, as if a weight had been lifted.
Similarly, while coaching the owner of a million-dollar consulting firm on business growth and time management, he expressed hesitation about paying contractors commissions for acquiring new clients.
"This is my business, and I don’t see why my contractors should benefit from my intellectual property," he said.
I suggested viewing his business differently. What if he encouraged referrals through his contractors and rewarded them generously? This approach could allow his firm to grow while others handled more marketing work, leading to increased revenue through leverage.
Though this may seem apparent to an outsider, for my client, it was transformative. (Keep in mind, the person being coached often realizes last, akin to a Monday morning quarterback.)
"Wow," he exclaimed. "I've had it all backwards!"
There’s no better feeling?"for the client or the executive coach.
