SunRocket - Did They Get You?
Introduction
SunRocket has long marketed itself as the "No Gotcha" phone company, promising transparency and fairness to its customers. However, recent actions taken by the company have left many feeling deceived and misled.
The Promise
SunRocket promised its customers a free extra phone number, either a Local or AnyWhere Number, included with their Annual or Monthly All-Inclusive Service. This package was supposed to include a Household Number and a Signature Number with no extra charges advertised.
For those on the Limited Edition Plan, adding an additional number would cost just $3.00 per month. The terms seemed straightforward and transparent at first glance.
The Reality
Customers, particularly those on the All-Inclusive plan like myself, are now facing unexpected charges. The appeal of SunRocket and its "no hidden charges" promise drew me in in December 2005. I opted for their All-Inclusive annual service for $199 per year and later, accepted a promotional offer: buy one year, get the second free.
Upon confirming with a customer service representative, I was assured that nothing about my service would change?"I would still have caller ID, voicemail, and other features, prepaid through December 2008.
A Deceptive Email
On May 23, 2007, SunRocket sent out an email:
> "Thank you for being a loyal SunRocket member. We are writing to inform you about the telephone numbers assigned to your account. You've been using our Signature Number service, which allows multiple numbers on your account. Starting July 2007, we will charge a $3.00/month fee for each Signature Number, in addition to your main household number..."
This unexpected charge contradicted what we were promised at the time of purchase: an included, free Signature Number with the All-Inclusive plan.
Examining the Evidence
With the help of the Internet Archive WayBack Machine, we reviewed SunRocket’s website from October 14, 2004, to April 27, 2006. Nowhere did it mention a supposed "extended trial period" for the free extra Signature Number. This email was an affront to our intelligence, trying to frame the situation as if we should be thankful for an alleged free trial.
Moving Forward
While companies may occasionally revise their rates, such increases should not affect pre-paid customers until the end of their current terms. It's understandable for SunRocket to adjust offers for new customers after July 1, 2007, but it feels fraudulent for them to alter the deal retrospectively for existing customers.
As Judge Judy wisely said: "Don't tell me it's raining while you’re pissing on my leg."
Conclusion
SunRocket’s actions contradict their "No Gotcha" branding, leaving many of us questioning our trust in them. Their decision to impose unexpected charges undermines the transparent values they initially promoted.
