Recording Your First Podcast
Podcasting is a fantastic way to build an online audience. Not only will listeners become acquainted with your expertise, but they'll also get a taste of your personal style and delivery. This medium seamlessly integrates with the process of gaining and sharing knowledge, positioning you as a recognized expert in your field. Overall, podcasting is a powerful tool to establish yourself as an authority and attract an audience interested in your content.
Previously, I outlined the essential tools for starting a podcast, available on my website or author profile. In brief, you'll need a microphone with a pop filter, an RSS hosting account, and some recording software. These basics are affordable and can be set up in just an hour or two.
This article will guide you through recording your first podcast. Remarkably, I discovered podcasting and recorded my first episode within 13 hours. It's not as hard as it seems if you dive in. With the tips below, you'll also save time.
Planning Your Podcast
Begin by writing an outline for your first 20 episodes. This may seem daunting, but it's just a title and a few bullet points for each episode. The goal is to map out how your expertise will unfold over the series. Each episode should build on the previous ones, allowing your audience to learn progressively. This approach also encourages listeners to subscribe for future episodes. Ideally, aim to release one episode each week.
Scripting Your First Episode
Next, script your first episode. With your outline in hand, expand it for recording. Some, like me, prefer to script the entire episode in a Word document. This helps organize and refine thoughts. I often revisit the script, adding details for clarity. However, you might prefer speaking freestyle with just a few notes.
I keep the script open on my laptop with the microphone ready, allowing me to read as I record. Knowing I speak at about 145 words per minute helps me gauge the episode length. Typically, my podcasts run about 19 minutes at 2800 words. Choose the length that feels right for you, but generally, keep episodes under an hour unless the content is particularly engaging.
Uploading and Distributing
After recording, upload the MP3 file to your RSS hosting account, then register the feed URL with iTunes. Simply navigate to the iTunes Music Store, click on Podcasts, scroll down, and you'll find the "Submit a Podcast" option. Creating an account takes just a minute. Additionally, submit your feed to top podcast directories?"links to the top 10 can be found on my website under the Links tab.
Podcasting is unique because audiences can discover you on their own. However, if your content lacks quality, listeners will quickly move on. But with strong content, you'll be amazed at how rapidly your audience grows. I launched my first series in January 2006 and reached over 16,000 downloads across 27 countries?"an unexpected triumph. Dive in and prepare for a transformative journey; it changed my career, and it might change yours too.
