Keyword Selection: How to Find a Good One ?" Part 2
Overview
In the previous article, we explored how to generate a keyword list using Overture. By entering a basic keyword into Overture's search, you receive a list of up to 100 related keywords and phrases. Each phrase is accompanied by the number of searches conducted on Yahoo in the past month. If a particular keyphrase interests you, you can click to explore further with a detailed search.
Analyzing Keywords
Begin by testing these keywords in Google to determine the number of pages available for each keyword. Next, organize this data in a spreadsheet program like Excel, but any software will do.
You'll need four columns for your analysis:
1. Keyword List: Up to 100 keywords or phrases from Overture.
2. Search Volume: The number of searches for each keyword as found on Overture.
3. Google Results: The number of pages found in Google for each keyword. You'll find this number below the search box, noted as something like "Results 1-10 of about 3,198,000 for 'keyword'."
4. Search-to-Results Ratio: This crucial column calculates the ratio of searches to results. Use the formula: (Searches * 100) / Results. This helps reduce the figure to a more manageable size, focusing on demand relative to supply.
Refining Your List
1. Sort by Search Volume: Ensure the list starts with the highest search volume. Remove any keywords with searches less than 500.
2. Sort by Google Results: Reorder the list according to the number of Google results. Delete any keywords with over 1,000,000 results.
3. Sort by Search-to-Results Ratio: Finally, sort the keywords by their calculated ratio to highlight those with the greatest demand and least supply.
Remove any keywords that are irrelevant to your content. If you're building a niche site, the top keyword becomes your homepage's reference point, while the others can be used for additional pages.
Geographical Considerations
Remember, both Yahoo and Google offer search variations based on geographical regions like North America, the UK, or Australia. Tailor your keyword analysis according to your target market.
By following this approach, you can effectively identify and use the best keywords to enhance your SEO strategy.
