How to Start a Small Business: Part 1
Starting a small business is a journey filled with challenges and rewards. Nine years ago, at the age of 17, I chose to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams rather than settle for a conventional 9-5 job. This decision led to a wealth of experiences, including a fair share of ups and downs, and some memorable horror stories.
After successfully building my business, I often reflect on what I would do differently if I were starting over. Here are some of the most crucial lessons I've learned, which I hope will guide you on your path to entrepreneurship.
1. Believe in Your Skills
Confidence in your abilities is key. Whether you're dealing with an expert in your field or just starting, it's vital to trust your capabilities. If you've honed a skill, chances are you're among the best. As a programmer, I've encountered many high-paid professionals whose abilities didn't exceed mine.
Why is confidence important? It shows in your communication and can help you secure clients, regardless of your experience level. Bold assurance is essential and can even make you a desirable candidate for hiring managers.
2. Avoid Free Work
Never agree to work that doesn't compensate you. Early in my career, I made the mistake of doing unpaid work to build my portfolio. Unfortunately, this often led people to mistrust my skills.
While helping others is noble, be cautious of those who might exploit your generosity. Protect your time and efforts by ensuring you receive fair compensation for your work.
3. Be Cautious with Promises of Future Work
Beware of clients who promise more work in exchange for discounts or free services. My first client insisted that working with him would lead to multiple new opportunities. Unfortunately, these promises often come with unreasonable demands and moving goalposts.
Such experiences taught me to stand firm on pricing and value. Competing on price generally leads to a loss, and it's crucial to find clients who appreciate the quality you provide. Though we didn't get paid, we gained valuable insights into handling difficult clients.
