How to Bind Documents with Velobind Hard Cases

Overview

Velobind hard cases offer an elegant texture and design that closely resemble a casebound book, providing a professional and impressive appearance. Using a GBC Velobind binding machine with these hard cases is an excellent way to achieve this look. Available in five standard thicknesses from 1/4" to 1-3/8", Velobind hard cases come with specific features to enhance your binding process.

Features of Velobind Hard Cases

1. Thickness Indicator: Inside each cover, you'll find a letter (A, B, C, D, or E) that indicates the thickness size the hard case can accommodate. This ensures you always know the capacity of your hard case, even without the original packaging.

2. End Sheets: Each hard case includes two adhesive-backed end sheets, packed separately. These should be bound with your document and will adhere to the inside of the hardcover, forming a seamless integration.

3. Adhesive Backbone: The backbone features a "softfoam" adhesive spine. Gently lift the paper backing to reveal the adhesive, which secures your document during the binding process.

Steps to Bind Your Document

1. Determine the Appropriate Hard Case Size

Refer to the chart on the Velobind or Surebind System Three Pro to select the right case size for your document. Check the stamped letter inside the case to verify.

2. Prepare Your Document

Place an end sheet on top and bottom of your document, ensuring the folded tear-off sheet faces the hard case and the lip is positioned to be punched.

3. Punch and Bind

Punch the document, including the end sheets, and bind it using a Velobind HotKnife Strip. The end sheets will serve as covers during this process.

4. Bind to the Hard Case

- Open the hard case and lay it flat on the table (inside facing up).
- Expose the adhesive on the backbone by removing the protective strip.
- Center the bound document on the hard case's back cover, pressing the strip into the adhesive. Adjust as needed to ensure it is perfectly centered.
- Fold the front cover over to align both covers. Repeat centering if necessary.

5. Secure the Document

For right-handed individuals:
- Use your left hand to hold the document in place.
- Reach under the front cover with your right hand to grip the end paper's fold-back sheet.
- Gently pull up to let the cover adhere to the end paper, and repeat for the back cover.
- Once completely removed, press down firmly across the front and back to ensure full adhesion.

With these steps, your document is neatly bound in an elegant Velobind hard case, ready to impress.
