Host Wars: The Battle for Disk Space

Introduction

In the ongoing competition among hosting companies, increasing disk space offerings has become a key strategy to attract new customers.

Article

Recently, I received yet another email from one of the many hosting companies I'm affiliated with. Without even opening it, I anticipated the message: "Dear Affiliate, we're excited to announce an upgrade to our basic hosting plans, now offering over 20,000 MB of disk space for your customers." The battle among hosting companies continues!

From a marketing perspective, offering 20,000 MB instead of 5,000 or 10,000 MB certainly adds appeal. More space can be a great advantage?"sometimes, more is indeed better. However, unless you're hosting a massive platform like eBay or running a connection for a small nation, the average company with a substantial website is unlikely to use 20,000 MB of disk space in a month.

For instance, my relatively small website, wbwebhosts dot com, has twelve pages, receiving around 200 page views daily. I typically average just 2 MB of disk usage per month. If every customer used 20,000 MB monthly, hosting companies would quickly exhaust their server capacities.

However, this approach is a strategic "hook" to attract customers. And why not? Having extra storage is preferable to not having enough. But, when choosing a hosting provider, consider what else sets them apart. Do they offer free setup and domains? Where are their servers located? Is there an easy-to-use control panel, like C-Panel? How competitive is their pricing? What about the monthly data transfer limits?

The host wars will surely continue! Perhaps by next year, they'll offer 30,000 MB to entice customers. For many, this will appear as a fantastic deal, and they'll feel fortunate to have found such a provider. By offering more disk space, hosting companies will continue to draw in customers and affiliates. In turn, affiliates will attract more clients, and customers will be satisfied with the abundance of storage.

Ultimately, if everyone's happy, the strategy is working.
