Freecell Master of the Universe
Introduction
Back in the days before laptops, my experience with video games peaked during the era of Space Invaders and Asteroids. I never played them at home?"instead, I indulged in bars. It was a great way to kill time and avoid getting overly inebriated. After all, idle hands are the devil's workshop, especially when one is holding a twelve-ounce Budweiser.
Transitioning from the Bar Scene
Eventually, as one outgrows the bar scene?"a transition I plan to make any day now?"many of its associated activities lose their appeal. My pool skills have declined, although I was never a Mosconi Fats, but that’s beside the point.
Entering the World of Laptop Gaming
Today's laptop gaming world is entirely foreign to me. I don't own an X-Box, PlayStation, or Wii (which always seemed like a misspelled WWII to me). Controllers and game pads are a mystery.
Initially, when I started using laptops, Tetris was all the rage. I tried it a few times but quickly lost interest. Then came Solitaire, and Vegas Solitaire, and eventually Vegas 3-Card Solitaire.
The Solitaire Craze
My co-workers and I were obsessed, setting up marathon games on the single laptop in our office, playing relentlessly. We didn’t care about the virtual nature of our winnings?"it was the thrill that mattered.
However, when I purchased my first personal laptop and started a new job where I worked mostly alone, the camaraderie that made those games enjoyable faded, seemingly ending my gaming days.
Discovering Freecell
Then, someone introduced me to Freecell. I became obsessed. Initially, my goal was to win every game. Every loss felt personal, while every victory was cause for celebration. My winning percentage soared into the 70-80 percent range, then the 90s.
Winning, however, no longer sufficed. I wanted to win beautifully. It became an OCD-like obsession?"not to be confused with Orange County. I aimed to arrange all my cards in neat rows on my laptop screen, Kings on top, deuces at the bottom, perfectly aligned. The ultimate satisfaction came from clicking the final card?"preferably the 48th?"watching the aces released and the deck cascading majestically to the top. And there I stood: Freecell Master of the Universe.
