Coaching an Attitude
Summary
Are you stuck in a challenging work environment with no immediate job change in sight? Do you wonder if your work matters or if you’ll ever have a brighter future? If so, you can navigate these difficulties and emerge better equipped to handle future tasks, whether in your current job or new opportunities.
How can this transformation happen? Through attitude. Your approach to even the toughest assignments can shape your future. The truth is, the only person you can control is yourself, and you can decide how to respond. If you choose to be angry with your boss and see their demands as unreasonable, your actions will reflect this mindset, making you an unpleasant employee, coworker, and even a less supportive parent or partner.
Article Body
Imagine a business owner who hired a temporary worker. On the first day, the owner asked him to move a pile of bricks from one spot to another and restack them. The worker did so, creating a neatly stacked pile by the end of the day.
The following day, the owner directed the worker to move the bricks back to their original location and restack them. Without complaint, the worker complied.
This routine continued for three more days. Each day, the worker followed the seemingly irrational instructions with care and attention, pleasing the boss.
In the end, the worker was promoted to a supervisory position because he understood the value of following directions without complaint, even when the tasks seemed nonsensical.
As an employee, you may not be able to change the path your boss sets for you. It might feel unfair, but your most critical role is in how you respond. A positive attitude can transform how your boss views you and your skills.
Consider another story of an elderly woman who was moved to a nursing care center. Before seeing her room, she declared, “I love the room.”
A nurse questioned, “You haven’t seen the room yet. How can you say you love it?”
The older woman smiled and replied, “Because I’ve already decided to love it, and that’s enough.”
Our attitude can profoundly change both our perspective and how others perceive us. Stress diminishes when we let go of tensions that cause issues like ulcers and headaches.
You have the power to decide your reaction. When it comes to your response, you are in charge.
