This simple experiment holds valuable lessons for business owners. If you run an online business and manage a team, you have a "business magnet" at your disposal to motivate your employees. It's crucial to understand that you will inspire them in one way or another.
For instance, if you rely on intimidation and threats as motivational tactics, your employees will indeed be motivated, but not in the way you might desire.
When dealing with challenging employees, there's a tendency to micromanage their time to ensure productivity. However, this approach has two major drawbacks: 1) You neglect your own tasks due to excessive monitoring, and 2) Employees feel stifled, leading to resentment.
So, how does this motivate an employee? Much like two south ends of a magnet, it pushes them away.
Adopting a harsh management style inadvertently drives employees away. The motivation you provide encourages them to seek new opportunities, leaving you to find replacements.
Conversely, when you use motivational techniques that invite employees to share ideas and insights, you’ll notice two important outcomes: 1) Employees are drawn to this inclusive approach, and 2) They often bring valuable ideas that contribute to the company’s success.
By viewing employees as essential members of your business rather than just hired hands, you’ll likely find they’re more willing to contribute to your success and experience greater job satisfaction.
Ultimately, you have a choice in how you motivate. One method almost ensures high turnover, while the other fosters loyalty and mutual success.
