4 Ways to Conceal Affiliate Links
Affiliate link hijacking is a significant problem. Some individuals change your affiliate URL to their own before buying a product, allowing them to pocket the commission and enjoy a discount. This issue is particularly prevalent when promoting to affiliate marketers, as they can easily spot and replace your affiliate ID with theirs, taking your commissions.
Additionally, some people simply dislike the idea of you earning a commission and will remove your affiliate ID from the URL altogether. Without measures to hide your affiliate links, you'll continue to lose commissions. Here are four effective methods to conceal them:
1. Use a PHP Redirect Script
This method is straightforward. Create a PHP file with a small piece of code. For instance, if promoting a link like `www-yourID.merchID.hop.clickbank.net`, you could create a blank page called `http://yoursite.com/discounts.php` that contains the redirect script. Promote this URL instead.
However, some affiliate merchant links might still show up in the browser's address bar, though this works well with ClickBank products.
2. Utilize .htaccess for Link Redirection
Similar to the PHP method, you can redirect links using your `.htaccess` file. Just upload a blank page to your server and add the necessary line of code to `.htaccess`.
Keep in mind that this method shares a drawback with the PHP script: the affiliate link might still be visible on the merchant's site in the browser's address bar.
3. Implement a Zero-Frame Cloak
This is my preferred technique for hiding affiliate links. It makes it appear as if users are navigating within your site, as your URL remains visible in the address bar. Users will think they are still on your site, though they’re essentially viewing the merchant’s site.
To apply this, create a page and insert a few lines of code, adding a title meta tag that fits the product description. Make sure to test your link before promoting it, as this method can affect tracking on some sites, potentially impacting your credit for traffic.
4. Hide Links in the Browser
This approach modifies links on your website so that when someone hovers over them, they don’t see the actual destination in the browser’s status bar. If your link were `www-affiliateproduct.com/uglyaffiliatelink?123`, users would only see `http://www.yoursite.com`.
By using these techniques, you can effectively cloak your affiliate links, increasing sales and reducing link hijacking. If you're not already protecting your affiliate links, you may be losing commissions. The harder you make it for others to identify an affiliate link, the more commissions you are likely to secure.
