Spammers and Spam Hunters: Who’s Worse?

Summary

When it comes to online nuisances, it’s hard to decide who causes more headaches: the spammers or those who claim to fight them.

Spam Woes

Today, I deleted 145 spam posts from one of my blogs. Thankfully, with comment moderation enabled, they never saw the light of day. While dealing with spammers is annoying, it’s not the biggest issue I've faced.

The Problem with “Spam Fighters”

The so-called "spam saviors" have given me more grief than the spammers themselves. Take sorbs.net, for example. They label your domain as spam if it shares an IP address with a known spammer. Guilty by association, you're then required to pay to have your domain removed from their blacklist. Sounds a bit like extortion, doesn’t it?

They claim the fees go to charity, but it turns out the funds support a legal defense, presumably for use if they are sued. Some charity, right?

Issues with Blogger.com

Blogger.com has also caused me plenty of "spam-convenience." They’ve locked me out of blogs, including one managed for a client, due to their spambot suspecting spam. Ironically, I have to complete a CAPTCHA for every post to prove I’m not a spambot, yet they still flag my blog.

The CAPTCHA itself often fails to load properly, making it impossible to prove I’m human. This flawed system cost me income on my client’s blog, something Google isn’t likely to reimburse. You can see for yourself at http://hotelsandapartments.blogspot.com. It's far from spam.

The first incident occurred a day after I created a blog, which had only one post. Despite this, I was blocked and received an unsolicited email from Blogger offering a review. The catch? To request this review, I needed to log in with credentials they had already blocked!

Frustration with Spam Fighters

This forced me to rebuild the blog elsewhere. All things considered, I’ve faced more challenges from spam fighters than spammers. Thanks for listening to my rant. Now, I’ll attempt to publish this post, hoping the CAPTCHA loads this time!
