Search Engines and the Gurus

Word Count: 789

Summary:

The internet hasn't changed people's personalities. Arrogant, nice, mean, or modest, human traits remain consistent offline and online. However, the web birthed a new persona: the Search Engine or Webmaster Guru?"a modern Frankenstein's monster.

These self-proclaimed experts believe they have unmatched knowledge about the web. If you disagree with them, you're just mistaken. You've seen them in webmaster forums, dishing out advice they often don’t follow themselves. They're not millionaires and rarely succeed online beyond telling others what to do.

They create websites full of advice and write an abundance of articles. Advice isn't inherently bad, nor is participating in forums or writing articles. However, these Gurus contribute little else. They don’t improve the web's overall quality by building content-rich sites or running an active business. Instead, they profit by instructing you on running your business.

They sell eBooks on managing an online business without doing it themselves, apart from selling you that eBook. They charge for search engine optimization (SEO) insights. While SEO is essential, Gurus exaggerate the importance of alt tags, meta tags, filenames, keyword density, and other technical details to sound more knowledgeable.

The truth is all the information you need is freely accessible online. You can become an SEO Guru by spending a couple of days absorbing the wealth of free resources available. Yes, just two days. That’s how little the topic is worth, in my opinion. Build your website, integrate keywords naturally, use a few in your alt tags if desired, and limit meta tags to title, keywords, and description.

For true optimization, focus on promotion. Foster link popularity, write articles, regularly update content, engage in relevant forum and blog discussions, and provide value. These steps will lead to web success.

Next time you spot an SEO Guru in a forum, ask what else they do besides dispensing advice. Do they have websites that don't just offer guidance? If they say yes, request links. Check their site rankings. Should you listen to them if their sites, unrelated to their SEO advice, don't outperform yours?

These Gurus want you to think deciphering search engines and building perfectly optimized websites require a special talent. They suggest constant adjustments for every minor search engine update. Instead, spend your energy promoting your website.

I advise clients to invest 30% of their effort and budget in website building and 70% in promotion when starting. Post-launch, allocate 10% to website optimization?"adding content?"and 90% to promotion. If you’re seeking a formula, there it is. It takes hard work, not magic solutions or shortcuts. Promotion remains the key. SEO Gurus are the dinosaurs of the web era, heading towards extinction.
