Link RelevanceSummary:
SEO experts and search engines emphasize the significance of page rank and link relevance to your website. This means focusing on links that are connected to your business area. For instance, a website offering cleaning services in the UK should seek links from cleaning machine or chemical suppliers, not competing cleaning firms. However, linking only to relevant sites is insufficient for competition, as competitors may have hundreds or thousands of links.Article Body:
SEO professionals and search engines emphasize that the value of a link hinges on its page rank and relevance to your site. Ideally, when crafting a linking strategy, you should prioritize links from related websites. For example, if your site offers cleaning services to commercial clients in the UK, suitable links would come from suppliers of cleaning machines or chemicals?"not rival cleaning companies. However, while this approach seems straightforward, limiting links to relevant sites might only yield around twenty links. This number is far from adequate for competing with rivals who boast hundreds or thousands of recognized links.
Understanding Google's Relevance
Google’s method for determining relevance can seem perplexing. Reviewing my own backlinks, I find some align with the typical definition of relevance, while others do not. Some of our suppliers, who have high page ranks and provide backlinks, are mysteriously absent from Google’s list. They might be counted by Google but aren’t disclosed, leaving us guessing.
The Role of Mathematical Formulas
How does a mathematical formula define relevance? For instance, if I backlink to my diverse group of clients, they appear relevant to me?"but not to Google. Despite having numerous backlinks from construction companies for our builder clean services, these are not seen as relevant, whereas mortgage companies are? Given that construction firms are often mentioned on our site, their connection should be apparent.
Examining the backlinks of major competitors further complicates the issue. Rarely do these links seem relevant on the surface. My lack of insight into the internal workings of these companies makes it difficult to judge possible connections.
A Seemingly Arbitrary Process
To me, the process seems arbitrary. I will continue building links to sites I consider relevant. If Google adhered to its guideline of linking only to relevant sites, it might only connect to other search engines.
It's easy for Google and SEO experts to suggest focusing on relevant sites, but the reality is they lack a true understanding of what is genuinely relevant. Hence, my advice is to build links with websites you deem relevant, both for yourself and for visitors to your site. It’s fascinating to see what Google deems relevant!
