Keyword Research ?" A Smarter Approach

Introduction

Effective keyword research is essential for online business success. Even the most impressive website needs well-chosen keywords to be discovered. If people are searching for "fishing," they won't find your site if it focuses on "angling." But competing with the term "fishing" might be difficult due to the abundance of high-quality sites. So, how can you attract traffic with the right keywords?

The Traditional Approach

Traditionally, optimization experts have advised comparing demand and supply to identify effective keywords for web pages. However, in my experience, relying purely on these ratios isn't enough. Some pages with seemingly perfect keywords don't gain visibility, while others unexpectedly make it to the first page. This is because it's not just the quantity but the quality of competition that matters. Supply and demand ratios alone don't provide the complete picture.

A Better Way to Conduct Keyword Research

Step 1: Identify Potential Keywords

Start by visiting the Yahoo site (formerly Overture) at http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com/rc/srch. Use the "Keyword Selector Tool" to examine the monthly traffic for different keyword phrases. Compile a list of words and phrases with reasonable demand. For my sites, I focus on keywords with at least a few hundred monthly searches.

Step 2: Analyze PageRank

Next, install the free Google toolbar from http://toolbar.google.com. This tool allows you to see the "PageRank" (ranging from 0 to 10) of any webpage. PageRank helps determine which sites appear in search results. Check your own pages’ rankings to gauge how well you can compete against others, considering you've optimized your on-page content.

Step 3: Leverage Internal Linking

Your current pages' PageRank can guide you in setting expectations for new pages. If several of your site's pages have a PageRank of three, you can aim for the same on new pages. Enhance this by internally linking to new pages from your homepage, site map, and other relevant pages.

Step 4: Compare Competition

To finalize your keyword research, enter your potential keywords into Google or another search engine. Examine the first ten results and note their PageRank. If some pages have a lower PageRank than your existing pages, it's a good opportunity to compete for that keyword phrase. Optimize your pages accordingly.

If the top results have a PageRank of 5 or higher, and yours are at 3, you might not be ready to compete yet. Occasionally, you'll find keywords with thousands of monthly searches and hundreds of thousands of results, but the top results have lower PageRanks. Conversely, keywords with fewer searches might have top results with high PageRanks. This shows that demand and supply ratios aren't the only factors.

Conclusion

Adopting this approach to keyword research helps you make informed decisions based on both demand and competition quality. This strategy combines traditional methods with modern tools for more effective optimization.
