In the evolving landscape of search engines and relevance, I’ve developed some insights on where search engine optimization (SEO) might be heading.
Keeping up with search engines is almost impossible. However, by focusing on the future of SEO and aligning with major search engine guidelines, we can better prepare for what's to come.
One major challenge for search engines is dealing with search engine spam, such as keyword stuffing used to artificially increase rankings. Google's advice to create pages for users, not search engines, hints at future trends. To stay ahead, it's crucial to take this advice seriously and move away from outdated SEO practices that could eventually harm us.
Many websites are currently being penalized and losing their long-held top spots because they haven't adapted to updated guidelines and continue using obsolete SEO methods.
To ensure long-term success and maintain high rankings, after conducting extensive research, I've identified a few key principles for future SEO.
One crucial aspect for future relevance is website copywriting. While not a novel idea, copywriting's importance is evident, contributing up to 45% of page rank. I predict this could increase to as much as 85%, as search engines prioritize informational content over technical tricks.
Some current technical aspects might soon become less relevant. Here are a few commonly misused SEO practices that may phase out:
1. Keyword Meta Tags: These are open to elimination due to widespread abuse like keyword stuffing. Many major search engines already largely ignore this tag.
2. ALT Tags: Some search engines are experimenting with ignoring ALT tags and have discovered that pages without them can produce more relevant results. Like Meta tags, ALT tags have been frequently misused.
3. Title and Description Tags: These tags will grow in importance. Accurate and well-crafted title and description tags complement a well-written website and enhance relevance.
I don’t recommend immediately abandoning current effective technical SEO methods, but a gradual shift away from them can be beneficial as search engines evolve. Personally, I've stopped using Keyword Meta tags and am simplifying HTML as it becomes irrelevant.
In conclusion, I believe future SEO standards will emphasize quality copywriting over technical elements like Meta tags, ALT tags, and headings to achieve higher relevance.
